Kalachuchi on a pot | Mama Nene's GardenKalachuchi Bonsai (Adenium Obesum) in my garden PUBLISHED: ---- Adenium obesum is a species of flowering plant in the family of the dogbane, Apocynaceae, which originates from the Sahel regions, south of the Sahara (from Mauritania and Senegal to Sudan), and tropical and subtropical eastern and southern Africa and Arabia. Common names include the star of Sabi, kudu, mock azalea, impala lily and desert rose. In the Philippines it is known as Kalachuchi It is an evergreen or dry succulent bush (which can also lose its leaves during cold spells, or according to subspecies or cultivate). It can grow at 1–3 m (3.3–9.8 ft) in height, with pachycaul stems and a dung, a swollen basal caudex. The leaves are arranged in spiral, grouped towards the tips of the shoots, whole simple, of leather in texture, 5–15 cm (2,0–5.9 in) long and 1–8 cm (0.39–3.15 in) wide. The flowers are tubular, from 2 to 5 cm (0.79 to 1.97 in) long, with the outer portion of 4 to 6 cm (1.6 to 2.4 inches) of diameter with five petals, similar to those of other genres related as Plumeria and Nerium. Flowers tend to red and pink, often with a blond bleaching out of the throat. The obesum adenium produces a sap in its roots and stems containing heart glucose. This sap is used as an arrow poison to hunt great game in all parts of Africa[2] and as a fish toxin. Adenium obesum is a popular homeplant and bonsai in temperate regions. It requires a sunny location and a minimum indoor temperature in winter of 10 °C (50 °F). Continue in a xeric irrigation regime as required by the cacti. A. obesum is normally propagated by seed cuts or stems. The numerous hybrids are propagated mainly by grafting in the seed trawl. While cultivated seed plants are more likely to have the swollen caudex at an early age, over time many cultivated plants cannot be distinguished from plants. Like many plants, obesum adenium can also spread in vitro using the culture of plant tissue. This plant has won the Royal Horticultural Society of Garden Merit Award.
