My young blackberry bonsai is maturing its fruits! Some advice? : Bonsai» » Green Island Ficus: Ficus Microcarpa Easy to grow Bonsai Ficus Green Island Ficus – Ficus microcarpa, [FY-kus my-kro-KAR-puh] is a slow growing plant that belongs to the Moraceae fig tree family. and are other popular indoors Ficus trees. However, Benjamina's root system is considered invasive. The Ficus microcarp is also known as the "Ficus Nana" plant with its bright leaves is different and known for its smaller and more "friendly" root system. Ficus microcarpa is relatively easy to grow outdoors in warm and humid regions such as South Florida, but requires a little more patience in colder areas. I remember being introduced first to this Ficus in South Florida during the madness of the plant of the late 1970s. In 2001, the Florida Association of Nurses and Crops (FNGLA) recognized the Green Island Ficus as the "Plan of the Year". Green Island Ficus Plant Care A quick look at this variety Ficus with bright deep green leaves could confuse the plant for a home jade plant in a tropical garden. Green Island Ficus Size & Growth In its native regions, the green island Ficus microcarpa can reach more than twenty feet tall with a huge cannon. The commonly sold and cultivated varieties in North America are a little smaller, reaching 8 feet tall if not preserved. The green island Ficus plant is normally cultivated as a low coverage or as a land cover. The shape is managed by prune to keep the Ficus at the desired height. Some people keep it cut from an early age to keep it like a small bonsai Japanese tree. The Ficus microcarp features dense green foliage with small and rounded leaves. Bright foliage is often used to help complement the surrounding plants with a tropical garden feeling. As a slow producer, the Ficus microcarp is easy to handle, but the root system tends to spread quickly, so it should not be planted near other vegetation or structures. Flowering and Fragrance The plant rarely blooms. It is cultivated by its thick bright green leaves deep green, offering shade or helping to establish a perimeter. Light and Temperature The ficus is a tropical plant and thrives in warm and humid places. It is recommended for resistance zones USDA 9 to 11. In areas with dry or fresh climate, the green island Ficus must be cultivated indoors or moved in the interior in the autumn. In the open air, you must receive full sun in the partial shade. Microcarp can handle the full sun and is recommended in regions with high humidity, while the shade of the part is preferred for more drastic areas, helping the soil retain more moisture. When placed in interiors, make sure that you put a lot of light all day. Consider putting it on a closed porch as the large glass windows often help to catch more moisture compared to the rest of the house. Water and Feeding This variety of ficus is a low maintenance bush that does not require frequent irrigation except when young. Until it matures, water from two to three times a week during the warmest months. Fertilizer is not necessary. After the plant matures, it only needs infrequent irrigation, approximately once every week or two weeks. Give it a deep watering, saturating the ground without completely drowning the plant. Ficus nana is more tolerant of drought than other Ficus varieties. Soil and Transplant Use common plant soil with good drainage. Ficus Island is low maintenance and an easy to grow plant. He tends to root in almost any condition unless the air is too dry or fresh. If the plant is cultivated in a container all year round, transplant it every two years to refresh the soil or grow your home. Transplant in early spring before active growth begins. Green Island Ficus BonsaiMaintenance and GroomingThe brooming is the main maintenance task when taking care of the Green Island Ficus. It's easy to keep small with pruning. Always use sharp pruning tools and trim all year round as needed. TIP: Remove dead branches to promote denser growth. How to Propagar Ficus Microcarpa 'Isla Verde'The propaganda is possible with root cuts. The root system spreads quickly, often reaching several feet. The roots can be divided and separated to spread the plant or grow new plants. Take a cut from a younger plant, immerse yourself in the root hormone and plant it in your own four-inch boot container. Don't cover with plastic. Just put it on and keep the water. Within a few weeks, the court must take root, becoming its new plant. Then it can be transplanted to the ground or kept in the container as a small bonsai. Ficus Microcarp Pest Problems or Microcarp Diseases is easy to care for without major pest or disease problems to worry about. However, chinches and insect pests of scale establish residence at the bottom of the leaves and along the leaf axes. Specify plants for pests and apply Neem oil for control. Suggested uses for the island of Ficus MicrocarpaIsla Ficus is best cultivated as a low landscape cover or as a small bonsai Ficus plant. The plant grows easily indoors like a small house or outdoor plant. When planted in large containers and planters, it makes an attractive bush when it is pruned for form. When cultivated from cuts it is easy to keep cut like a small bonsai tree.
